1. The Help

Last Spring I listened to The Help audio book on my way to and from work. I generally don't listen to books when the girls are in the car with me. One of two things inevitably happen... Either Ava starts listening (sometime inappropriate for 4 year old ears...) to the book and begins asking questions, or she becomes a chatterbox and I can't hear anyway!

This book was so good, I couldn't stop listening. I had seen this book at the store several times, had even picked it up and put it back a few times. During last school year, Tamika and I had also listened to Water for Elephants, when it came out in theaters we went to see it. It was there that I saw the trailer for The Help. I went home and downloaded it immediately. This is by far one of the best books that I have read.

I love how the characters in this book each have their own distinct personalities, Skeeter is advised to write about something she cares about, that hasn't been done already. During the time that this novel is set, it was dangerous for Skeeter and "the help" to stand up for what they believed. This took courage beyond my comprehension. Strong friendships were built.

The novel made me think about how often people, including myself, don't speak up when an injustice is being done. It is easy to just fall in line like everyone else. It is difficult to stand up and speak out. Part of my motivation in this project is to make myself think, push myself outside my comfort zone. I want to set an example for my girls, that doing what is easy, isn't always what is right!
